The Roma Termini railway station is the most important railway station in the city of Rome, the largest in Italy and the second in Europe after Paris Gare de Nord for passenger traffic. The station takes its name from the nearby thermal baths of Diocletian. The first station was built in 1862 and opened to the public February 25, 1863 under the name " Central Train Roman " . On July 2, 1868 began the preliminary work of the new station Termini with an opening ceremony in the presence delpapa Pius IX, up to the time of the choice of the final project that took place in 1869. Work began immediately , but after the storming of Porta Pia Rome was passed to the Kingdom of Italy , therefore the work suffered various interruptions and a general slowdown in the construction were completed in 1874. Following the standard scheme of the time, the Roma Termini railway station was equipped with two buildings travelers parallel , one for arrivals and one for departures , brought together by a central metal roof , similar to the one built just before in Paris at the Gare of ' East The upmarket business district around the station is very much alive , full of shops and is ideal for a Roman holiday being a very central and well connected the Underground , in the last 20 years around the station has developed a multi-ethnic community that makes the ' different atmosphere from other districts of Rome
